Nihil obstat: legal approval of a censor of the Catholic Church which, from the point of view of morality and Catholic doctrine, sees no impediment that a book is published. This Latinism which means nothing opposes any impediment, appears on the back cover or legal page of books published by Catholic publishers and before secularization by all the books published in Western culture, as the Church was, on its own initiative, the guardian of culture
